As the CBD industry continues to grow at a rapid rate, some of the biggest questions surrounding CBD revolve around dosage recommendations.

How much CBD should we be using, and how strong should our dosage be?

There are lots of variables that affect how our products are ingested and how bioavailable they are to our body.

So what is the starting dose? To be fully honest, we know what formulation to give based on THC and CBD ratios, but we don’t have exact information to give exact dosage recommendations.  Many CBD companies in the industry have good practices on how to  approach dosing but like the rest of us, there is no HARD data.

We do know that you can’t overdose on CBD but we also know that everyone has a different level of efficacy depending  genetics and body states. When I advise doctors, brand partners and friends, I always advise to start low and work your way up.

But there is a recent advancement that is helping us unlock this puzzle and it utilizes DNA testing technology. There are a few companies that are starting to use DNA sequencing information that can create an accurate profile of one’s endocannabinoid system and its receptivity.

Companies like Greenway DNA are doing this in a very thoughtful and transparent way. The main core of what they do is to identify something called single-nucleotide polymorphisms – repetitive DNA single nucleotide errors that are natural in our DNA. These sequencing variations encode proteins that change the end protein makeup. That change in protein results in a physiologic change in the body. This gets much more complex but at its most basic, what these companies have done is identified the strands responsible for the opiate receptor, the serotonin receptor and enzyme receptors. This is important because those receptors are responsible for the benefits that come from using CBD oil.

As an example, we know that GABA receptors cause you to have a better response to insomnia and anti—anxiety medication; If that receptor has multiple mutations, it may not accept the molecule that’s supposed to be binding to it, making the medication less effective. Findings like this allow us  backtrace and follow the path from these receptors. Using this information, they are able to decide if a person is going to need a higher dose of CBD based on those DNA snippets that code for the specific proteins that CBD provide benefit for. They  will see if you need a higher dose for pain, anxiety, inflammation, etc.

The way the testing works is, Greenway sends you a kit with a sterilized swab to take a sample of saliva from the inside of your mouth. Once you send it back, it gets sent to a lab where to get analyzed. Your report is sent to you along with recommended dosage and findings.

It’s important to understand that these particular insights relies on an accumulation of compiled DNA samples. As this compiled information continues to grow along with our understanding, there will be more specific insights that can be made in the field of DNA based CBD treatment. Because of this, Greenway DNA will continue to follow up on your report with more fine-tuned results and specifications regarding your specific ailments and their specific dosage.

We encourage all of our patients to pursue this as part of their overall journey towards wellness.
