Harmful Effects of Inflammation and the Anti-Inflammatory Benefits of Cannabis

Chronic inflammation can cause joint, organ and tissue damage. Medical marijuana can help reduce chronic inflammation and help patients manage the discomfort and pain associated with it. Inflammation is the immune system’s response to bacteria, viruses, and injury. Inflammatory response eliminates the damaging or infectious stimuli, allowing the body to start the healing process.

When it’s called upon needlessly, the immune system responds as if tissues are abnormal or infected when in fact they aren’t. As such, the body causes damage to tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and atherosclerosis are examples of diseases linked to inflammation. Such diseases are treated usually with pain and anti-inflammatory medications. The affected area is not used as well. In some cases, there is a need for surgery.

Cannabis Helps with Inflammation

Medical marijuana contains cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which helps reduce the pain caused by inflammatory-related diseases. It also helps reduce chronic inflammation. According to studies, tetrahydrocannabinol is capable of lowering atherosclerosis development. Atherosclerosis is a significant risk factor of strokes and heart attacks.

Cannabinoids can also reduce flu virus-related airway inflammation. Chronic inflammatory diseases usually cause inflammatory pain. Examples of such diseases are cancer and sickle cell disease. Cannabis is proven to help in pain management of such diseases. The cannabinoids act upon the CB1 (cannabinoid receptor 1) and CB2 (cannabinoid receptor 2), which are responsible for managing pain linked with inflammation.

Several states have already approved the use of medical marijuana in treating inflammation. Although inflammation is exactly not included in the list of approved diseases for medical marijuana, many states do include certain inflammation-related conditions. For instance, medical marijuana can be used to treat patients with arthritis in California, Connecticut, New Mexico, and Illinois.

Colorado, Alaska, California, Arizona, Delaware, Michigan, Hawaii, Maryland, Maine, Montana, West Virginia, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, and Pennsylvania have also approved the use of medical marijuana in treating inflammation-related conditions that cause chronic pain. West Virginia, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Ohio, and Washington have allowed the use of cannabis for treating intractable pain. Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Ohio and North Dakota also permit the use of medical marijuana in treating severe pain.

Individuals who have Crohn’s disease can also legally use medical marijuana in Arkansas, Arizona, Massachusetts, Illinois, Montana, Connecticut, Michigan, Hawaii, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Maine, Ohio, Washington, West Virginia, Minnesota, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Ohio. In Connecticut, medical marijuana can be used to treat ulcerative colitis which is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease.

Many states also consider approving cannabis for treating other conditions, but a recommendation or approval by a physician is required. In California, medical marijuana can be used to treat any debilitating illness provided that a physician recommended it. In Washington, any debilitating or terminal condition can be treated with medical marijuana. In Nevada, Oregon and Rhode Island, other conditions are subject to approval. In Washington D.C., any condition can be treated with medical marijuana provided that a DC-licensed physician recommends the treatment.
